Palm - Jelly or Wine Palm

The Butia or Jelly palm yields a host of edible and useful products. They have large stalks of golden fruit in clusters. The fruit is green before it ripens, then turns golden, sometimes having a reddish tinge when ready to eat. Soft, tasty flesh surrounds a hard seed that looks like a miniature coconut. Although delicious when eaten fresh they are most often preserved due to their stringy fibrous flesh. Jelly palm fruits are picked as they ripen. If whole bunches are harvested, they tend to ripen all at once. They keep well under refrigeration for around a week. This South American palm is native to Brazil and is the hardiest feather-leafed palm in cultivation. The palm has beautiful blue-green leaves that are strongly curved making it instantly recognisable. It is an essential palm for the exotic garden and is also a wonderful indoor plant providing light is adequate. For best results fertilize the Palm in the spring, and in mid summer. The spent leaves should be cut to improve its appearance. A long living palm (over 20 years) it enjoys full sun or part shade and thrives in a sandy loam soil. Adequate moisture will greatly improve yields. It is salt, drought and cold tolerant so can be grown in a range of environments

The Honey Date Palm is the Barhee dates very famous nickname because the taste is of soft melting honey and caramel. It is not as famous as the Medjool Date possibly because it is not as big and much harder to be packaged, transported and stored due to having a lot more liquid in the flesh and easily bruised. So although it can not compete on practicality it can definitely match and better in it's honey like taste. By far the sweetest date variety. You need a Male and Female to pollinate and this can be done via the wind. Via the wind one male plant can pollinate a female plant but if space is a problem and you would rather more female plants than it might be best to pollinate by hand to ensure fruit set. Our palms are small seedlings and can not be purchased male or female. You need to wait until they flower to find out. They will take about 4-6 years to flower. We recommend a planting of at least three to increase your chances of having both a male and a female palm. If you get a long hot dry summer then dates are a must for your backyard. Also the cost of dates often exceeds $20 per kg so when you do get a big harvest it will be well worth it. Especially when these dates taste like honey and are much more unique and special than the Medjools. The name Barhee comes from the Arabic word barh meaning hot wind.

Originally from Iraq, Khadrawy are a small date with high moisture content, making it nicely gooey with a rich caramel flavour, though less sweet than the Medjool date. They are a dark mahogany colour with dry, flaky, paper-like skin. The flesh melts in your mouth. Mostly eaten fresh but when dried the sugars can crystallise giving it a crunch. Our palms are small seedlings and are not sexed, they will take about 4-6 years to flower approximately and you will not be able to tell if they are male or female until then. We recommend a planting of at least three to increase your chances of having both a male and a female palm.
