Very attractive slow growing tree, with dark green leathery leaves. Native to wet forests of Central America.Oval shaped fruits are produced in summer reaching up to 2cm. The white pulp has a pleasant subacid aromatic flavour, with a similar flavour to the Achacha.Very ornamental making an excellent display potted plant. While the tree may not produce fruit in colder regions, the leaves are quite cold hardy and can tolerate winter conditions. May require protection from frosts when young. Grafted onto more cool tolerant rootstock, experimentally. Most parts of the tree are used as medicine by traditional custodians, including leaves. It is a tall slender tree to 10m with creamy flower spikes in early summer. Small yellow green olive-sized, plum-like fruits ripening in autumn. Have very high Vitamin C content, can be eaten raw or cooked. Flavour is sour with an astringent aftertaste. Traditionally used as a thirst quencher and snack. Widespread over the northern tropical woodlands. It also is used in the seafood industry to improve shelflife of prawns. Fruit contains oxalic acid so consume in moderation.
