Grows up to 12 meters high. It has glossy, elliptic to obovate leaves which have whitish, waxy undersides. Younger leaves and branchlets are covered with brown hairs. It has small, 2 mm long flowers followed by rounded, black fruits which are about 8 mm in diameter and ripen from mid-autumn to early winter. In a forest, it is recognisable from its dense shade cast by the large leaves, and in the open it has a beautifully rounded crown.
