Highly ornamental tree and the source of cinnamon spice. The beautiful red new growth is highly distinctive. The spice itself is the inner bark that is peeled from the branches after 2 years. Scrape the outer bark, then peel the inner bark, leave for a day so that the inner bark curls into cinnamon sticks as it dries. They are distinctive in the many layered quill they produce that, when crushed, will shard rather than snap. Cinnamon is a very elegant and useful aromatic, much kinder to the palate than other spices. It imparts a distinctively sweet flavour when used. Bamboo - Gracilis

Slender erect green culms that when exposed at base will reveal long green internodes that turn yellow when in contact with the sun. Gracilis is a very popular variety and for good reason. Its growth rate is rapid and can handle almost any growing conditions and soil types and still look spectacular. Also known as Slender Weaver Bamboo it has dense evergreen foliage that can be left low to the ground or pruned away to show of its many culms. Gracilis is a non-invasive tight clumper that can easily grow in a narrow boxed garden bed. The fresh new shoots are edible. Culms can be split in long lengths, are strong and thin walled making them ideal for use in handcrafts such as basket weaving, furniture making, and musical instruments to name a few. To ensure the safe consumption of bamboo shoots, it's important to boil them before use. This process helps to remove the cyanogenic glycosides produced by the plant as a defence against herbivores. It's advisable to boil for at least 20mins and change the water once or twice during boiling to ensure all toxins are eliminated

Acerola - Florida Sweet

This bright red cherry like fruit has varying tastes during different stages as it ripens. When fully ripe the fruit is juicy and aromatic with its acid content giving it a sweet acid apple-like flavour. The tree can produce a number or crops each year, making for quite a long harvest season. Our selection is called the acerola Florida Sweet Cherry and is a pleasant eating variety that is not too sour. The acerola is well suited to pot culture where it can be kept to a smaller size. It could also be grown this way in cooler climates where it can be moved to a warmer position in the winter. A word of warning the foliage of the plant is covered in tiny irritating stinging hairs that can produce an allergic reaction. When pruning your trees wear a long sleeved shirt and a pair of gloves.
