Ashley - the leaves will go red or bronze when it's really cold? Can u post a pic at all?
Is it getting enough water and do u have good drainage?

Mine used to grow in Chch with no issues & no leaf drop...they have frost almost every day in winter (even snow sometimes) - there's no way you'd get cold enough temps in Auckland to do serious damage to a feijoa.

I'm guessing it might be a water or drainage issue. Although they're reasonably dought hardy, they still need a good watering especially when they're establishing. And bad drainage will seriously effect them. Are they in clay? To give you an idea how much it effects them...I have two trees planted about 3m apart. They get the same amount of sun, water, etc...one is doing really well & the other is stunted & sometimes drops it's leaves. The only difference between the two (apart from variety) is the drainage around the second one is appalling (& yes, we're in the process of fixing it) & the ground has a lot more clay in it.
