anna apple questions

    10 responses

Leanne starts with ...
I recently bought a Tropical Anna apple tree (too much of a bargin to pass up) and am trying to find out some information however everything on the web seems to contradict and is also not what I was told at the nursery. If anyone can help with the following it would be greatly appreciated –
1. Are tropical anna self fertile? I was told by the lady at the shop that I would get fruit with the one tree but the web seems to indicate I need a cross pollinator?
2. Does anyone know of them fruiting as far north as Townsville? I am hopeful but don’t know that we have enough chill hours here
3. IS there any way to ‘fake’ chill hours? Someone told me to water with chilled water at night
Thanks in advance for any help

Leanne - your question 3 is a very good question considering the climate change environment we are in.

Do you mind if I pose this question to the forum as an individual query?

Thanks Brad, that helps lots with the chill hour questions. Still not sure if they are self pollinating?

You're best to buddy it up with Dorsett Golden or Tropic Sweet for a decent crop.

My Anna is flowering like crazy in Brisbane, and my much younger pink lady is too. No sign of blossom on the golden dorset yet. I suppose pink lady and anna might cross pollinate?

It's a while since I have written anything on this forum. It's been a very busy year and also my camera is on the blink.

Thanks

Leanne I took the liberty of checking out your collection.Quite a few species you have prefer it cooler like pomegranate, navel, imperial.ceylon gooseberry, feijoa all of which I tried in Cairns but alas failed.Blueberry will also be interesting and blood orange may not colour completely.Townsville is perfect for red paw paws, sapodilla, longan, lychee, good mangoes, most citrus and many other species. The apples will be a challenge.I hope you can get everything to thrive and be fruitful.
