I have a beautiful apricot tree in the backyard. I am not sure which variety, but it is old, old, old. I pruned it right back, basically to a stick, thinking it probably wouldnt survive, but to my suprise it grew and then fruited- it was absolutely covered. The fruit however was covered in black spots. I have looked in books to try and find what this could be, but I havent worked it out yet. Can you suggest anything?

It sounds like apricot freckle.
Have a look at
http://www.yates.com.au/ProblemSolver/Freckle.asp
Freckleis mostly a fungal disease of stone fruit and almonds. The disease starts off as small brown spots or freckles on the fruit which become scabby. Wet weather in spring and summer favour the disease spread. Prune trees to promote good air circulation so that twigs, leaves and fruit dry quickly. Apply fungicides at the appropriate times (dependent on fruit type).
Symptoms: Dark spots or cracks, on mature fruit and dark lesions on undersides of leaves and on shoots. Spots are flush with the fruit surface and can join together to form larger spots.
