Avocado, high country Victoria (forum)

High Country Carrie starts with ...
Hi, I live in the high country of Victoria, elevation a little under 700 meters. Cold winters, occasionally a smattering of snow. I have a new greenhouse, 6 x 4 meters. I'd like to take a crack at growing an avocado in a pot in the greenhouse. Am I crazy? Are there any varieties you stock that might be worth trying? I'd like to try and get something that doesn't take 7 years to fruit. I'm 64 already. Thanks for your help.

You can grow graft Bacon outdoor in ground as it can handle -3C to -4C when it is established (3-4 years old).
In a greenhouse you can grow Lamb Hass, Pinkerton in a 100lit to 200lit fabric pot as it is a dwarf type, about 3m height. Most graft Avocado will have fruits in 2-3 years time.
I suggest to start with the graft Avocado in the greenhouse 30lit pot. After a year or two transplant to fabric pot if grow in the greenhouse (Lamb Has or Pinkerton) or in ground if grow out door (bacon) when the tree is strong enough. Cheers.

I would get a grafted Bacon tree.... It's a variety that seems to do ok in the colder climate & if its grafted you should have fruit within 2 years.... Mike
