avocado(?) leaves going yellow

HELP please! This tree was planted by the previous owners so we don't know exactly what it is, think it's an avocado.

As soon as we moved in about 7 years ago a very hungry possum basically destroyed it. It has taken 7 years! for it to show any signs of life.

It finally started growing leaves for the first time this year, but recently I've noticed it's started dropping a lot of its leaves :( they are turning yellow with a strange pattern.

Questions:
1) What sort of tree is it? Could it be avocado? If it's not a fruiting tree, we might just get rid of it. We've been so patient...

2) What is causing the leaf drop? Is it a deficiency or virus?

Thank you for any advice you might have!!

Hi BloodPlum1,

It looks like we're both suffering the same thing at the same time - and the same situation. Sorry to hear about the possums eating the tree :( it is indeed looking like an Avocado tree tho!

Any help would be greatly appreciated by both of us!

1. Yes it looks like an avocado to me.

2. Avocado trees do drop their leaves just before a new growth flush, usually in spring. I would only be concerned if the new growth is suddenly dying.
