Minky starts with ... Hi I was just wondering do black sapotes have invasive root systems and can they be planted close to other plants? I have bought a seedling and was planning on planting it in a garden bed along with lilly pillys, grumichamas, dwarf mulberry, blueberries and a strawberry guava. It would be within 2 metres of a lilly pilly, the mulberry and the grumichama, is this Ok. Also the garden bed is within 3 metres of a pool (the black sapote approx 8 metres away) Any help would be appreciated. | About the Author Minky2 Newcatle NSW 19th November 2009 8:18am #UserID: 1278 Posts: 9 View All Minky2's Edible Fruit Trees |
HappyEarth says... I wouldnt imagine they have invasive roots, especially in newcastle climate they would never grow into a big tree. They can be planted close to other plants but any competition for water and nutrients will slow growth. Lilly pillies and mulberries can grow into a pretty big tree - are you going to keep these pruned? otherwise they might totally shade out your black sapote in the future. Minky says... Thanks Rich for that info. The lilly pillies are only the smaller versions growing to about 4-5 metres and they are all on the the east to south eastern side of the black sapote. The dwarf mulberry is on the southern side of the black sapote with the grumichama on the northern side. As a result the black sapote should get full sun as I believe the black sapote and grumichama will grow at about the same rate. And yes I will be to a degree pruning the lilly pillies and the mulberry. As for the nutrient and water competition I will keep an eye on this and try to deal with it as it comes. Do you know what sort of growth rate I should expect from a black sapote under good conditions in Newcastle? | About the Author Minky2 Newcatle NSW 21st November 2009 12:52pm #UserID: 1278 Posts: 9 View All Minky2's Edible Fruit Trees |

HappyEarth says... Hey Minky ... i reckon the growth rate should be similar to your lilly pilly. Good luck with it all!! Rich www.happyearth.com.au | About the Author HappyEarth Wollongong 21st November 2009 4:07pm #UserID: 2553 Posts: 181 View All HappyEarth's Edible Fruit Trees |
