Bit confused -pots, bonsai bags or both?

Hello to everyone

Firstly I'd like to say how much I have enjoyed reading this forum and gleaning so much information.

I am new to growing Fruit trees and vegies for that matter but I am very confused about growing fruit trees in containers. I have two quetsions:

1. Do I grow a tree in a bonsai bag or a pot or do i put the bonsai bag in a pot? If so what do soil do i put around the bag in the pot?

2. Can I use normal trees in a pot or do I need to buy dwarf varities? Is one better than the other?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

You use one or the other...personally, I prefer them over pots as they dont collect spiders as some pots do and they are easier to move and have excellent drainage. They dont look as good though. Dwarf varieties are more suitable for pot culture but this does not mean you are limited to using dwarf varieties exclusively if you dont want to. Here is more info from this site, if you havent watched it already: http://www.daleysfruit.com.au/blog/2006/07/dwarf-fruit-bonsai-bags.html

Yes there are a lot of trees that will happily grow in pots and often you will get more fruit proportionally when they are in pots then if they were in the ground.

Most fruit trees you will happily grow in a pot with only a few exceptions such as your avocados due to them needing exceptional drainage.

Although dwarf varieties are well suited to pot culture by regular pruning you will be able to keep normal fruit trees down to a manageable level. Even if you don't prune them they will not grow as big.

Pots are very expensive and for a good sized plastic pot you can easily pay $30 which makes the actual plants quite cheap in comparison.

If you are buying fruit trees from a nursery like daleys I would go straight from their 140mm pot which most trees are sold in to a 35 litre bonsai bag

However if you were doing some cuttings yourself I think it might be better to grow your cutting on into the larger bonsai bags by starting at the 15 litre ones.
