zoepg starts with ... Hi all, I am wanting to plant an edible hedge in our front yard, and am thinking blueberries as our soil is somewhat acidic. The front yard faces west (so quite hot in the afternoon) and receives around 6-8 hours of sun depending on the season. I'm wondering if I choose all the same variety to hedge for uniformity, or choose a few different varieties to extend fruiting season. I'm leaning toward different varieties, as a longer fruiting season appeals to me, but I'm not sure how much variation I would get in the plants and whether this would look odd? I also can't seem to find any information on whether blueberry bushes are truly deciduous - a bare hedge in winter would probably look a bit strange! Any helps, tips or photos of edible hedges would be a great help! | About the Author zoepg Croydon 27th July 2018 1:19pm #UserID: 18740 Posts: 1 View All zoepg's Edible Fruit Trees |
Fruitylicious1 says... Hi Zoepg When choosing blueberry cv for your hedge select the southern bush varieties that are upright in habit and evergreen or semi evergreen. Two outstanding southern bush cultivars comes to mind; misty and legacy which will cross pollinate as well. While powder blue and brightwell are two rabbiteye varieties that are excellent blues for hedging as well which will readily cross pollinate each other very well. ATM I have both sunshine blue and burst. Both are compact and can be easily cultured in containers which I'm currently doing. The choice is yours.
