Bunya Nut (forum)

I have a Bunya nut tree, which is about 30years old in wollongong. 4 nuts have fallen this year and I find that the nuts are hollow or that there is a small red seed inside. :( Anyone know why?

Do you have any images (with a reference to size would be good). I've collected scores of nuts this year and have been compiling a list of trees on public lands around Brisbane for anyone who likes to collect the nuts. I've found that lots are very small/immature and seem to have been dropped early. It could be a few things - lots of rain this year, bumper crops (competition) etc. Has your tree given you full sized fruits/nuts in the past?

Thanks for your reply. I Dont remember ever trying to extract nuts from the tree in the past as i guess it was difficult and i was not as interested as now. Perhaps they did fall immaturely as we had a lot of rain recently and many dropped during that time. We did also have a bumper crop, about 20 so far. The nut appears to be full size (If you put your middle finger to your thumb). Just empty/not developed on the inside.

Apparently Bunya nuts are famous for producing a bumper crop every three years - aboriginal tribes came from hundreds of miles around for these feasts in SE Queensland. I wonder if it was the quantity of cones produced or just that the nuts were filled out more so than they are this year. I picked up a cone a few weeks ago at the side of the road in Chillingham (near Lamington NP) which was poorly filled, yet a neighbour of mine brought me one from Tumbulgum on the Tweed River which has beautiful nuts inside. Seems kinda patchy this year.
