Bunya Nuts - nuts not filled? (forum)

Honeycomb Valley Farm starts with ...
We planted our Bunya Nuts from Daleys a few years ago so they're a while off producing, but someone generously dropped us in some Bunya nuts the other day...but when we get to the almond-shaped nut, it seems empty inside. Has anyone any experience with this?

How big are they and how long since they fell from the tree? I've found this only a few times in the hundreds I've husked. Even then, I've usually found it happening in old cones or just one or two per cone.
