I've noticed a yellowing of some of the older leaves on my Cape Chestnut tree. Is this normal or does it suggest a nutrient deficiency?

Looks like you might need some trace elements. Epsom salts are very cheap, around $3.00 a kilo at health shops, they will help green the leaves up. Also you can buy bags of trace elements from garden/hardware centres which will probably do the trick and correct any deficiencies.
