Cape Goose berry disease and pests

    10 responses

I purchased a Cape Gooseberry this year. It was health on arrival. I potted it in a large pot and it was producing fruit. The original leaves were as expected but the new grow the leaves appear to have something like leaf curl. They are not smooth but bumpy like blisters they are a deep green. Before the fruit could fully form the dropped. There is no sign of aphids or any other obvious insect problem.

Hi Step

Your gooseberry might have been unknowingly damaged by herbicide. They are very susceptible to oversprays and leaching of any form of herbicide. In retrospect, someone, not necessarily you might have over sprayed chemicals near your goose bush, if applied as a soil drench it might have leached to the goose's drip line.

I have uploaded an image of a herbicide damaged gooseberry for your reference. It has small narrow, curled and deformed leaves like your description. It might also be other fungal disease but you haven't uploaded a picture so i am not 100% sure. But, that's the closest possible damage according to your narrative.

Happy Gardening :-)

Hi Step, I came across your post as I was searching for an answer to my Cape Gooseberry problem. I can confirm the leaves of my plants look like yours and that there has been no herbicide sprayed (by us or our neighbours). Did you ever find out what was wrong with your plants?

My Cape Gooseberry has lost all its leaves. About 4 weeks ago i got heaps of fruit off, but today its been stripped of all leaves.
All i can find is a cobweb residue on a leaf (which i removed). It grows under a Monstera shrub where it really thrives.
I don't use chemicals but i will to save my gorgeous Gooseberries.

Mine too! A large portion of the leaves are curled and some parts are discolored. Some of the leaves are even fused to eachother, and the gooseberries that have formed have tight "cape's" around them--not a nice lantern shape! I would be happy to know what is causing this.

I realized it was from too much heat/sun in the summer. Now that it is autumn, lush new leaves have come in.
