Chill hours (forum)

Does anyone know how I can find out the average number of annual chill hours experienced in the Hunter region or Newcastle area? 'Stella' Cherries are on sale locally but I'm not certain there'll be enough cold to fruit here.

It is v hard to get straight answers . Better to see if anyone has success with stella.Or you can check other deciduous fruit trees such as low chill peaches and see if they produce.
When there is adequate chill cherries will have an even bud break ,no stragglers , adequate in number . The tree will not try and make a second crop. My guess is suburban Newcastle will not be cold enough . Having said that I would still give it a go and plant in site that gets winter shade.

Hi, Give the Stella cherry a go(600-650 chill hours). I have one in the ground but I will plant more. Plant it in the lowest area where you live as this will help with the chill hour requirements. Cold air in winter accummulates in the low lying areas first at dusk. Don't be put off if it takes 3-5 years to produce, be patient. I have trees growing that I have been told will not survive in our area (inland from Bundaberg). At the moment I am surviving a mangosteen and abiu (rainforest trees strict tropicals), you need to be prepared to control the climate if possible to help the trees. A product called Poly-keeder can be used to grow trees way out of their comfort zone(tropicals). It is a multilayered greenhouse covering. The point is look for ways to grow fruit that is not suitable for ur area. Most times there is a way :).
