do these usually have thorns?
We bought a washington Navel & then failed to look after it properly, so it withered away, but on recommencing watering etc, it sprung back to life from much lower down the stalk... but with thorns - I am not sure if the tree is grafted & thus if the growth is from BELOW the graft (ie another species - I don't recall the plant having thorns initially, but admittedly we weren't in the garden much at that point! :P

Most likely you now have a bush lemon tree, your Navel orange was most likely grafted to a bush lemon root stock.

thanks for taking the time to reply - I ended up trimming away the thorny growth, leaving 1 or 2 branches that we realised didn't have thorns & looked like the original navel orange tree... so we're hoping for the best :)
