Dormant nectarine tree (forum)

Hi there, I planted a bare rooted nectarine tree (dwarf royal gala) in July and it's still dormant (now mid oct) Is this normal? It's supposed to 'mature' in Dec, which I took to mean 'fruit', but maybe I'm wrong.
Is there a problem with the tree or do we have to be patient and wait another year?
It's north facing and near a sprinkler so getting lots of sun and moisture.
Any advice appreciated.

Hi Kate,
For most plants, dormancy is broken by soil temperatures rather than air temperature, which takes longer to warm up in spring/summer. Trees only metres away from each other can have months between their breaking of dormancy due to microclimates. Because of this, there is nothing to worry about just yet.

hi Kate Mac,
judging by the photo you've uploaded, your tree looks like it's budding and getting ready to start sprouting leaves/flowers. I don't know whether you'd get fruit this year though, but usually first year it's best to sacrifice the fruit and allow the tree to develop a good root system first.
