Feijoa losing leaves

    5 responses

Hi
I have a Nazemetz feijoa growing in a large pot. However it has been consistently losing leaves for quite a while, especially in the lower parts of branches. I have another feijoa that's growing in a similar sized pot and it is doing fine (no leaf-drop). One of the branches has lost nearly all of its leaves (except for one). Sometimes just touching the leaves cause them to drop. Strong winds have also damaged only a few leaves, but I don't think that's the actual problem. Is it some soil/watering issue or something? Would appreciate some help.
Thanks

Hi Samuel Z,

If you live in Melbourne, Its time Feijoas grow new leave and you need to water the pot daily. It looks like your feijoas lack a lot of water. Check the soil humidity 20-30 cm below the surface. Cheers.

Ok thanks but I do water it quite regularly and I check under the mulch to make sure the soil is moist and not too dry. Maybe it's too much water? There are adequate drainage holes on the bottom of the pot. Will the feijoa recover and grow back in those places where it has lost leaves? Quite worried about its health. I'm hoping it will make a nice bushy shrub.

Hi Samuel Z,
From my experience with Feijoa here in Perth, this time of year the 30lt pots get filled to the brim every morning and now that they are flowering every 2 weeks soluable fertilizer, i buy an all purpose one from Bunnings.
If any one would like to swap a White Adriatic or Panache fig for a large Feijoa in flower, please let me know.

Thanks - I do use fertilizer (e.g. Powerfeed), but I'm just worried about it losing more leaves; it already is looking rather sad- i'm hoping that it won't become a bare tree. Will the feijoa recover and grow back leaves in those places where it has lost? I'm training my feijoa into a bushy tree shape. There's another feijoa right beside this one and it's doing perfectly fine with no loss of leaves like mine. Maybe overwatering? I just gave it some fertilizer and hope it will recover those lost leaves. There is also some kind of pest that eats the young leaves (I have not seen the pest itself).

Hi Samuel Z,

You need to dig a few holes 20cm deep to check whether the water get down to the bottom of the pot. May be on top surface looks moist but below is very dry. Also, when the plant lost leaves you should stop feeding fertiliser until it gets back to normal. Cheers.
