Is this normal for Sandpaper Birds Eye fig? Or has it succumbed to the recent heatwave?

Hi Norbert

Your soil became totally dry at one point making it water repellent. So even if you douse it with copious H2O the water will just pass through without wetting the dirt.

To rectify this issue dunk your pot and all in a bigger container with water. Let the fig and pot soak for at least half an hour until all the bubbles have stopped rising. The potting mix should have been fully re-wetted by then.

Next time don't let your potty mix become totally dry especially at the height of summer. Be vigilant always checking for moisture level and water accordingly.

Yes, the recent heatwave will surely damage plants if we are not vigilant. We had also heatwave here in inland NSW were the temp was just hovering 40C and above for 3 consecutive weeks last month (Jan). At the first sign of sunburn I immediately transfer my potted plants under a tree and shaded the bigger ones. Watering everyday even twice sometimes. So far there is no casualty or serious issues.

It's also beneficial to prune all dead or dying branches to help the plant to recover quickly.

Happy Gardening :-)

Thank you for your answer Fruitylicious1 .
I do keep an eye on my plants and try to shade those I consider most vulnerable : I hadn't realised that would apply to a fig .
Since that photo was taken some green shoots have appeared . BTW the potting mix was sheep manure .
The pot is currently soaking to make sure the mix is fully re-wetted .
