Since 2007, I have been trying to cultivate Fuchsia splendens without much success. Now finally, after 10 years, the plants are starting to take off and have produced their first flowers.

The reason for my persistence in growing this species is that it's fruit are held in high esteem and well documented to have the best tasting fruit of all the Fuchsia berries. Now I'm getting closer to trying them, just need the plants to make fruit so any advice on the care and raising of these cloud forest plants will receive my utmost attention.

Thanks for listening!

Hi Linton,Glad to see that they finally coming good for you- they probably needed a while to acclimatise. Fuschias need semi shade to filtered shade (under trees is good), they like to face East or South down under, acidic-ish(not alkaline) soil and plenty of water in Summer with a cool winter. Good luck .Make sure they are not getting reflected heat from walls, they are forest dwellers so like to be among other plants.

Hi Linton

First up. Congrats for persevering for a decade to finally gaze the first flowers of your fuschia splendens. It's also good to know that the flowers are hermaphrodite and easily pollinated by insects hence a good chance to see them to fruition and have your first taste in the near future. Don't forget to describe to us the mouth watering details of the taste of the first fruits of your labor.

Happy Gardening :-)
