I have a good spot at home to plant our imperial mandarin tree- only thing it is directly above power we have running to the shed. the power lines are 1.6m down there may be the possibility that we connect water along there too. would this be an issue if the mandarin tree was planted above. are they invasive?

No, they are very shallow rooted, they won't even come close. Those power lines are very deep at 1.6m, normally they are around 500mm down.

John, when you say they're very shallow rooted... 50cm? I saw this topic and was curious as I have a few spots where I'd like shallow rooted fruit trees, and an Imperial Mandarin is on the list of trees I'd love to have somewhere.
Thanks
MJ

The shallow roots of manderine are also dependent on the rootstock used, to my knowledge flying dragon has the shallowest root system followed by trifoliata.
