Insects plaguing figs (forum)

Hi All,
I'm not a very experienced gardener, althougth I have a lovely array of fruit trees in my yard, and I do my best to look after them.

Our fig tree has been very happy this year (enjoying lots of grey water). We've had a good crop thus far (~6kg since the start of the month), and really beautiful fruit too.

I noticed on friday a few figs had been infested with some kind of flying insect. They crawl inside the fig and cause it to rot prematuerely and obviously become inedible.

Normally, around this time of year, my "fight" is with the birds, possums and the fruit bats. But I climbed the tree today and was somewhat dismayed to discover that of maybe 20 ready to pick figs, only about 4 were good - the rest are simply riddled with the wretched bugs.

FYI I have had insects in previous years, but they aren't usually a problem until late in the season - mid to late March, (by which time most of the fruit is either eaten or been made into jam).

So after that long winded story - is there anything I can do?! I've never sprayed anything on or around the tree, and wouldn't know what or where to start. If it helps I can post a couple of pics of bug infested fruit.

Thanks for any help,
Paul

Could it be fruit fly. You would need to destroy all infested fruit especially fruit that has fallen on the ground and hang fruit fly traps. Try this before using chemicals
