Kiwi Fruit (forum)

IanAlmond starts with ...
I was worried and now I am really worried that I don't have the right male kiwi. My female is a Sweetie (Actinidia Chinensis) and is looking good in about 3rd year but has not yet flowered. I am on to my 3rd male (after a couple of failures) (Actinidia Deliciosa) and I think it is alright but no signs of new growth yet. The male and female have always lost and gained leaves at different times and I am worried that they wont flower at the same time.

Just checking the website now I see there is a Male Sweetie (which I am sure I have never seen before).

What should I do?

I even planted an Arguta male last year and it hasnt even budded yet.

This year I have grafted a friends male Sweetie to 2 Chinensis Females (Bruno & Hayward) and to a Female Mt Tomah red (Arguta)that has flowers growing day by day.
I did this now in the hope of getting pollen if my Hayward male doesn't flower with the Females.The graft pushed buds in one week.(see Photo)
One Hayward female is flowering first time this year (4th year in)and is budding flowers along with male so am hoping will coincide and maybe will pollinate last half or third of Mt Tomah Kiwiberry flowers.

Hi Ian I am also part of the failing female flowers club my Haywood works good but my female sweetie and Wayne's flower to early for the males. I even grafted male sweetie onto a branch of my female sweetie to see if that helped the male flower earlier, it was still to late. At the moment I have 10 Enza Red/Hong Yang seedlings that are in their second year these appear be very low chill, some even breaking bud before sweetie, hopefully I will have a pollinator in the next couple of years. I think Mark or Linton is growing some gold seedlings on, so hopefully there will be a pollinator soon. The other possibility is to get a commercial low chill male, but I have not found that easy.
