Loss of Blueberry leaves

    2 responses

I recently planted a misty blueberry and after a couple of days I noticed that the older leaves were eaten and some were on the ground. It appears to be happening every night. At this rate in a week it will be stripped bare. Has anyone got an idea what is doing this. I have a Boloxi blueberry that was planted the same time next to this one but it has not been touched.

Watch out for earwigs, they can strip leaves, new shoots and flowers overnight. Scrunch some newspaper inside an empty terracotta or plastic plant pot and place at the base of the bush. They will go in to shelter during the day and you can incinerate them or drop them into a bucket of hot water.

Probably earwigs, as they eat at night. Go out with a torch and look under leaves etc. Organic solution for earwigs: Jars at the base of trees and shrubs, half filled with water, and a dash of tuna oil (found in the fishing aisle of department stores). Earwigs are attracted to the smell, fall in and drown in droves! Only empty jars when getting too full, as the smell of rotting earwigs seems to attract more of them. Newspaper idea is another good trick, especially if you have chooks to eat them when you empty to pots out. Try the jars of oil near the plants, and the upside down pot with newspaper in another part of the garden.
