Lychee fertilizer burn or something else?

Hi all,

My son fell in love with this little neglected Wai Chee Lychee so we saved it from the nursery and popped it in the ground.

It had quite severe tip burn initially but has gotten worse over the month it’s been in the ground. I have given it Seasol and a bit of blood and bone and kept the water up to it (without keeping it soggy). It’s in a shade cloth hidey hole so I don’t think it’s sunburned. The new flushes of flowers/growth seem to brown almost immediately.

Is it beyond saving? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Should I pull it out and put it in a big pot to be able to better control moisture levels?

Hi Jenji ,

I found Lychee is very highly sensitive with any kind of fertilizers when it is young. You only need to water to keep it moist. In your case you may need to dig up the plant and change the new soil if it is fertilizer burn. Cheers

Thank you David, I dug it out and sat it in some very diluted seasol while I replaced the soil with well composted soil from under our giant Moreton Bay Fig trees. Hopefully it will pull through. Nothing but water for a while I think!

Hi Jenji,

Soil for Lychee PH is around 5.5 to 6. Make sure the soil from Fig tree close to that range otherwise you will have another issue. Cheers
