Lychee needs a distinct cold season when temps are less than 10 deg C. ;maybe Rambutan is a better choice.

Lychees are grown commercially here in north Queensland, around here in Mackay and the Whitsundays there are many farms and I'm guessing there are more further north.
The major problem we have is Flying Foxes so most are netted

Do different varieties have different needs though? I don't know anything about them - and just quoting Susanna Lyle here - who says 100-200 chilling hours around 4oC...? (= very brief)
But - you wouldn't get that around Mackay would would u Wayne?
(They grow them on the Atherton Tablelands around Mareeba)

No where near that Amanda, we rarely get below 10 degrees in winter. Perhaps 5-10 mornings a year a touch of frost in the hinterland

In point of fact the BOM observations for Mackay in August shows several days where the temp fell below 10deg C

We've had three days below 10 so far this month Kert, the lowest being 9.3
Today will join them though, it is also wet. August is our coldest month of the year.
