Hi Sue,
Macadamias are easy to germinate, and different methodology only really changes how quickly the seeds germinate.
Soaking the un-cracked nuts 24hrs prior to planting is required to break the dormancy. Less effort, but longer germination wait. (1-2 months)
Cracking or de-hulling nuts (carefully) and then soaking for a couple of hours will break dormancy and lead to quick germination. (1-2 weeks)
Warm, moist conditions are needed for healthy seedlings, and fungicide is a good precaution to take. Germination times may vary from those stated above,
However, the main problem i've always experienced when growing macadamias from seed is the possums digging them up!
Happy Growing!
