old cherry query (forum)

We have a cherry tree in our new garden that is over 10 years old, perhaps 20 or more... its only 6-8 ft high, has been pruned back recently and hasn't fruited in the previous owners memory- they kept it for its blossoms.
Today I noticed it was half dead and I knocked one third of its trunk and branches off which were hollow, the rest is leafy and looks healthy enough with the trucks left in a wide V shape. As I hate to kill trees, is it worth keeping this tree, is there a way to stimulate fruiting for next season? Or would it be a useful pollinator for the new trees?
I also plan to put in a few other cherries, etc, late next winter.
thanks, Heidi-
sorry the pic is on the side! For some reason it wont save changes

Sounds like white ants - this happened to my old apricot tree recently. But the rest of the tree is alive and bearing fruit.
Lack of fruit is probably due to having no pollinator nearby. Maybe when you get new trees they will help each other. Though it helps to know varieties - I think you have to plant the right ones together.
