out of season fruiting tree

    1 responses

A friend of mine has a nectarine tree growing in Melbourne and it is fruiting NOW! with 20 ripening fruit on the tree. This is completely out of season, is there a problem with this tree i.e. is it about to die, is it suffering the effects of the drought? Should this tree be pruned now or later in the winter?

Debra,

I'm just taking an educated guess here, based on my childhood/teenage years on a fruit farm. I'd say it would be due to the drought, and the erratic weather patterns we have had. I wouldn't expect the tree to by dying if it is producing fruit. I'd let the fruit grow, and prune later in the winter. I think the trees tend to set thier own blossoming and fruit growing patterns and would let it go its merry way.
