Passionfruit problem

Hi All (first time post),

I'm in Melbourne and I've planted 2 passionfruit vines in very large pots - Nellie Kelly Black and Nellie Kelly Panama Red (both grafted). Both are showing some curling mutation in the leaves (see pics) and the Black has some yellow spots on one leaf. The panama red doesn't seem to be growing at all. It's the second one I've bought from Bunnings - the first one also didn't appear to be growing so I replaced it.

Do you think these vines have passionfruit woodiness virus?
If yes, how can I treat them? If there are no treatment options, how can I prevent infection of future vines? And finally, do Panama Red vines grow more slowly than Black?

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi,

I’m nowhere near good at gardening. I’m learning from many many failures. All I know so far is that anything that curls/twists/mutates on the leaf is some type of bug and/or fungicide. Given that passion fruit is part of citrus, it’s probably citrus leaf miner. I had it on my lychee(friggin expensive plant) so it was pretty sad but it’s not the end.

I can’t give you a pure non chemical hippie solution but the general idea is that you get an oil based pesticide/fungicide(if there’s a citrus one that’s even better). It’s in the Bunnings gardening isle for pesticide. First remove or prune all the “infected”l leaves. Even the branches if it’s that bad. Get rid of it far away. They are all f”ed. Spray that thing quite generously all round, then spray it again 2 weeks later. That should remove them for now but they could always come back later which you can’t stop. It’s like some kind of moth I think which lays eggs inside soft or new leaves then the lead dies from the inside.

Good luck

KylMelb, did you end up finding a solution? Several of my passion fruit leaves have yellow spots as well, like in pic 3.

There are a couple of diseases outlined on this page, https://www.homestolove.com.au/passionfruit-pests-9862 but sadly no pictures of diseased plants. I looked at a couple of other sites and it seems Passionfruit Woodiness Virus (fruit are affected) or Cucumber Mosaic virus (fruit not affected) are the most likely culprits. Both are spread by aphids, so check to control them and get rid of (burn/dispose of) any affected vines. Clean shears as this can spread to other plants.
