They are actually a climber and grow very vigorously. They can grow for several metres and become very thick and bushy and should bear much fruit. There are several varieties, although the I think the commonest one is the black passionfruit.

Thanks for that, now I can plan where to plant it. It's just that it doesn't have the feelers like the vine and the leaves are more pointed so I was unsure.

As long as it has right conditions and the ability to climb along something you should have no problems.

They are exciting because of just how fast they grow.

Basically they will grow as much as they can. I like to prune them back vigorously to make sure they don't strangle any trees they manage to come in contact with.

Guys, are we talking about a 'tree' or a 'vine' here? This was sold to him as a 'passionfruit tree'. This plant is totally different to a vine, I've never seen one before. I think the best idea would be that he goes back and get some more info from where he got it, it is definately not a 'passionfruit vine'. Thanks for your comments so far, I'll keep you posted.

Hi again Wayne
I dont think there is such a thing...not that I have ever heard of anyway. I am intrigued. I just did a Google search, to no avail. I am wondering if perhaps it is another type of fruit tree, which they are calling by this name? Is it possible that you can upload a photo or describe the leaves and any other characteristics of the plant you have? Please do keep us posted!

A passionfruit is a vine not a tree that I was aware of.

Thank you for your replies, I to tried to google it but found nothing as well. I noticed a nectarine tree in a fruit fly topic on this page and the leaves are similar in shape, only a little broader and not in clusters, the trunk and leaf stems are pale pink. It is only about 8" [200mm] tall but I will try and post a picture if I can't get any satisfaction from the market next Saturday. I'm starting to think that this is just a local name for an ornamental tree [shrub] as I can't imagine a tree with passionfruit hanging from it. My son is good at finding these things, he brought home a 5 Fingered Citron that I lovingly looked after only to find it was good for nothing except a talking point.
