Pear pollination - what would you choose? (forum)

Hi all, I have five espalier pears and room for one more. The varieties I have are Bonza and Sunshine (pollination partners); and Corella, Christmas Pear and Comice (all possibly partly self-fertile). Just wondering if there are any recommendations for the sixth tree that will fill a pollination gap?! I would prefer something that has a good chance of fruiting in Perth's climate (I already have an experiment with the Comice). Many thanks for your ideas.

Hi, EalaBan, you like your pears.
I had a thought of maybe grafting different cultivars on each espalier arm? you could have many varieties on a couple of trees. Pears graft very easy. I had no trouble grafting a tropical nashi onto my 20 year old pear tree, amongst other cultivars incl Beurre and Packham. I think the original pear tree was a Williams.

Thanks for your reply John Mc. The trees are being grown as cordons so I don't think I have space for grafting(plus I'm a bit intimidated!). It sounds like you're having success with some varieties I thought would need a colder climate. The beurre bosc sounds good, does that fruit well for you?
