Violet's report:
They expected a few hundred people to turn up but it looked as though there were a few thousand. I arrived at around 10.15 and there was already a queue but at least I got a parking spot on the orchard grounds. By the time I left, at around 3 pm, the orchard car park had overflowed and cars were parked beside the road for a a good two kilometres. Seriously.
The place was buzzing. Families everywhere. I did the 'Orchard Tour' and meandered around the numerous interesting stalls, where I picked up a Free Organic Codling Moth Trap. In case anyone is interested, this consists of a couple of strips of corrugated cardboard and a couple of lengths of twine. You tie the cardboard around the trunk of your apple tree and when the moth grubs climb up they think they've found bark crevices, and burrow into the cardboard. Later you peel off the cardboard and find all these grubs, which you feed to your chickens and later eat as eggs.
There were organic food stalls, plant stalls, permaculture stalls, Tarot reading stalls etc. And constant lively music from an excellent folk band on stage, followed by Peter Coombe with his songs for kids.
Around 11.30 I started to help with cutting up heritage apples for the Apple Tasting Queue, which stretched for miles. There were twenty or more different varieties for people to sample, after which the tasters voted on their favourite apple. I do not know which apple won the day, because I had to leave before the votes were counted.
But all the ones I tasted were delicious.
An interesting day, enjoyed by all.
