I would like to grow Podocarpus elatus fruit as part of my bushfood garden. I took some cuttings from some local trees; three from a male tree and three from a female. I only had success striking a male. I would rather not wait so long to try and strike a female so I would like to know if it is possible to tell the gender of a Podocarpus seedling and if so can Daleys supply me a definite female?

We do not sex our trees here as no one has the skills to do so until they flower which takes many years. I would suggest you try with your cuttings again if you do not wish to wait years. Otherwise we recommend a planting of at least three seedling trees to increase the chances of having a mix of both male and female trees.

Do you know if it is possible to graft a male section onto a female tree?
