Hi, I was looking at the northern plum but read that they are susceptible to disease in hot weather. Could someone please recommend me what plum would grow best in the hot climates of the Torres Strait Islands...thanks and happy new year Connie

Sadly connie - I would not recommend plums for a hot climate at all - let alone a humid-hot climate. I grow low-chill plums here and they do very badly.
They get seriously sunburnt. Low chill plums are the Japanese plums (which I have)
Maybe Kakadu plum instead?

I would have to agree with Amanda and you might be 2000km to far north with Rocky to Mackay about the farthest north on the coast any plum would grow.

The Davidson plum might be a good candidate - at least you can make plum jam and jelly out of them

Even Davidson Plums from the wet tropics lowlands would struggle with the wind and dry season and might disappoint if you were expecting a plum taste. You would be better of with a true tropical that is tough.Sapodilla, jackfruit, guavas, abius, sugar apples, passionfruit and jaboticabas might be more suitable.

You can look for the Wongai plum locally. Tastes more like a date though. Good dwarf coconuts are everywhere. Supposed to be good ultra dwarf coconuts on Mua/Badu.
