Poinciana trees (forum)

Need information on Poinciana tree. They are a beautiful shade tree but is there a downside to them. Have been told that the liquid or "sap" is very acid and harmful, need a lot of water, prone to be very brittle, roots run on top of ground and are very invasive to other plants and especially if water pipes nearby. Would appreciate views. Thanks

Hi Hugdi,
Poinciana's are a great, beautiful plant - as a shrub rather than a tree (in my opinion). Poinciana sap is NOT poisonous, this is an urban myth. It will slightly irritate the skin if contact is made however.
They do need lots of water to thrive, but may survive on less. They are very brittle plants as well. Their roots are semi-invasive, and often grow near to the surface.
Overall, Poinciana are fantastic if grown as shrubs, but are hard to maintain as trees.
Regards,
