jason, I'll tell you my experience for what it's worth. I have some large prickly pear (Opuntia) on the edge of my dam wall. They only started flowering when a large Eucalypt behind them fell over one day exposing them to more sun than they ever had. They flower and fruit every year now without fail with no input from me, I mean, really no input, no water, fertilizer or weeding, nothing.

I've read some people foliage spray or apply some liquid potash to encourage flowering. I can't confirm for sure, but I've had copious flowering on my Acerolas after a couple of foliar applications of liquid potash.
This year I'm giving one of my large dragonfruit plants a course of foliar potash, it hasn't flowered in two years after a move. I should see flowers beginning mid to late December.
