Teebsiejo starts with ... Hi, my young quince (Champion) which I planted a good few months ago developed what looked like a fungal leaf infection. I sprayed it with a copper sulphate fungicide and it seemed to improve a little, but now all of a sudden the leaves are looking way worse, turning colour and ending up crispy and brown. Caused by the fungicide? Or further infection? Can anyone help? | About the Author Teebsiejo VIC 2nd January 2011 10:52pm #UserID: 4730 Posts: 1 View All Teebsiejo's Edible Fruit Trees |

Rae says... Wow, almost overnight my treasured 10 year old quince has transformed from a most healthy looking specimen into this state!! Is this Quince Fleck? If anyone can advise what I should do at this point in time I would be grateful. Should I leave it, should I spray it - happy to sacrifice the fruit for this year if I must - should I cut it back and dispose of the leaves - probably leaving it without any at all - should I kiss it goodbye? I've noticed some peeling bark at ground level in the last few years, but apart from that (and the pear and cherry slug) it has been magnificent. | About the Author Rae6 Melbourne 10th November 2011 6:32pm #UserID: 6102 Posts: 5 View All Rae6's Edible Fruit Trees |

Rae says... Yes Quince Fleck is correct. I actually had the disease positively identified and confirmed through The Department of Primary Industries (AGRICULTURE VICTORIA) at their Crop Health Services in Knoxfield Victoria - cost $160 - but I needed to know exactly what I was dealing with as I didn't want to go spraying chemicals around if I didn't need to. Mancozeb and Copper oxychloride seem to be the solution but it has to be at the right time. Look under Apple Scab in Judy McMaugh's book WHAT PEST OR GARDEN DISEASE IS THAT? for more information and treat accordingly. BTW... All the fruit is now falling prior to maturity, the leaves or what's left of them now look scarce, crisp, spotted brown and hideous and if the wind and rain don't abate the quince harvest will be non existant this year. | About the Author Rae6 3rd March 2012 7:28pm #UserID: 6102 Posts: 5 View All Rae6's Edible Fruit Trees |
quince says... 25yr old quince tree -vaRiety PINEAPPLE-leaves smaller than normal and yellowish instead of dark green.tree 3m tall 2m diameter.not heavy bearing and fruit tendeency to be tennis ball size. portion of fruit appears to have brown-rot.symptons. the main problem is on the trunck/branches/twigs--seems like brown/black dry sawdust. easily removed to reveal wart-like growths.total removal of sawdust has no effect next yr returns as before. ??????? | About the Author quince1 adelaide 12th March 2012 1:56pm #UserID: 684 Posts: 2 View All quince1's Edible Fruit Trees |
