R2E2 mango in pots (forum)

I have run out of room in my quarter acre of suburban Brisbane to grow any more trees in the ground. I am thinking of growing the R2E2 mango in pots and I am wondering if anyone is doing this in SE Qld and how much success they have with it fruiting. Curious to know what size pot also.

I gather from the lack of response that no one considers this is an option

Yes sounds like it's a bit out of everyones' league. They're a huge tree, you could try Grobags which kind of bonsai the tree, I know they use them for stonefruit, you can bury them or leave them above ground

Today I carried out the hard prune of the Kensington Pride in the front yard. It has not fruited for some years and I thought I would try to get it to a managable size and in the meantime try to get an R2E2 fruiting.

Looks like I will be giving that idea the boot. Instead I think I will try grafting some R2E2 wood onto the emerging shoots on the existing Bowen. See how that goes.

I read a story a while back of a fellow in India who has grafted about 127 varieties of Mango on to the one tree - what a sight that must be. Would be a good way to go instead of making room for an entire R2E2 tree.

No-no to R2E2 in pots Mick. Grafting is the way to go ------------ do you know how to do it?? I don't, so if you can tell me how to do it I'll give it a go on my tree.

I like Phil's idea

That is a very good site dealing with grafting mangoes. I would expect that grafting onto the new shoots of a mature tree that has been hard pruned will be much the same.

I have never attempted to graft mango but have had success with grafting passionfruit previously.

A-hah!, that's how it would be done, I was wondering how the R2E2 got started from such big trunks of the old trees, thanks Mick
