au0rey starts with ... Can anyone who has grown grapes recommend some grape species to me? The Pink Iona from Daley's sounds good but I wonder if the Black Carolina or Black Muscat is better. I am looking for one that is sweet and good disease resistant. It does not matter if it is black or white. It is meant for eating and not wine-making. Seedless is a bonus but I understand all grapes at Daley's are not. I plan to grow it in a large pot at my verandah. It would be so nice to achieve something like what I have in this picture. :P

amanda says... Hi au0rey + Adam - I have a black muscat - (it's a Wortly Hall - something like that) - and it's a tough grape vine - I get few problems which is a good sign as I live right next to the coast (=humidity and salty wind) I would love to try the Hamburg but can't source it here :( The white muscat gives me a lot of headaches with powdery mildew. Adam - can sultana seedless be grown in a pot? | About the Author amanda19 Geraldton. WA 11th August 2009 9:25am #UserID: 2309 Posts: 4607 View All amanda19's Edible Fruit Trees |

Adam says... The Wortley hall grape is a 19th century variety from Yorkshire, said to have a milder flavour then Black Hamburgh. Not sure about the sultana. The vines will grow in pots, but the question is if they will produce descent quality fruit. The two muscat varieties mentioned above were commonly grown in the UK, either in green houses or on a sheltered wall for table grapes. If powdery mildew is a problem then you could try training the vine to have a much more open structure. | About the Author Adam Melbourne 11th August 2009 1:19pm #UserID: 1613 Posts: 110 View All Adam's Edible Fruit Trees |
