Red Mulberries (forum)

I am looking for a particular strain of mulberry. It is Middle Eastern in origin (called "Toot Shami" in the Middle East), the berry is plump, roundish and red, then black, ripening much later than the more common mulberries, around February. It has an intense, sweet and sour flavour. I have seen a few trees in Tasmania and Victoria, and I am keen to get a tree. Could anyone advise please?

hi ehud,
try doing a seach for pictures of the
black english mulberry and see if they have the same leaves as the ones you have seen.

there is also a red shatoot mulberry
which originates from around the pakistani area but they have a long
red berry.

Hi Abdul. I did not get very far. I know the tut shami, and I found it in several places in Victoria and Tasmania, usually on old trees. Amongst other places, there is one good tree in Sovereign Hill, Ballarat, behind one of the old houses (the school if I remember correctly) which bears great fruits. However I did not find places that sell the plant. Probably sold under a different name!
Please let me know if you find more info.
Cheers
Ehud

Hi Abdul,
I can only tell if I see the actual berry. I can't really tell from the shape of the branches or buds. Where did you find it, BTW?
