shahtoot grafting (forum)

i want to graft some red shahtoot
branches onto a mulberry rootstock
but am unsure when this should be done.
i have read that the rootstock should
have the sap rising and the scion
must be dormant.
is this the case and would it still
apply to grafting on an entire branch?

Yes, keep the scion in the fridge until you see buds starting to swell on the rootstock and you should do ok.

hi barry,
so does that mean that the scion must be dormant for the graft to work?
what if the scion had its bud bursting as well, can the graft still be done?

It may work but best to be dormant, keep it cold to maintain dormancy but allow the rootstock to behave normally
