Slow growth avocados and browning leaves

Hi
I am hoping to get some advice re our dwarf shepherd and hass avocados.
Planted approx 3 years ago as per advice of nursery.
Soil prepared with dolomite lime, gypsum, chicken manure etc as per advice on label.
Nursery told us to plant on raised bed and cover with lupin mulch to protect roots and aid retention of water. Also had stakes with shade cloth covering sides for first 2 years.
They both have flowered every year and this year produced 3 hass fruit.
Watered with retic small spray to base 3 times a week Sept thru to May and in the warmer weather given a deeper drink with hose to roots.
Fertiliser regime we follow the tags that came with the avocados in terms of what is needed when and the quantities.
Despite all the above they seem to be growing very slowly, leaves often browning and falling off and they just don’t look happy as per the pics. If anyone can give some advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Max

Hi Max,

1. Avocado plant loves acidic soil, PH around 5.5 to 6. Dolomite lime is used to increase the PH of the soil. Unless your soil PH is less than 4 otherwise it will end up 7 or 8 which is not good for Avocado.

2.Plant grows very slow and leaves browning and falling off that the symptom of dying root or root disease. There could be too much water, high salinity in soil, too much fertilizer etc. You need to send photos for accurate advice. Cheers.

Hi Max,

It looks like your Avocado got sun burn, high Salinity in soil and perhaps too much fertilise which could be ended in dying roots. But we will tackle it later.

1. To avoid sun burn when tree is young you need to paint the exposed trunk with water base paint and cover the whole tree with shade cloth around 50% until it has all leaves cover the trunks (3-5 years). Avocado doesn't like direct hot sun and afternoon sun when it is young.

2. What kind of fertiliser that you are applied? what is the rate? How often?

3. Do you use the rain or tap water. Does it contain high salt?

4. Check the soil 50cm below the surface around the base to see whether its dry or moist? Cheers
