soft pawpaws (forum)

Hi, can someone advise if they know the cause of paw paws being extremely soft as they turn slightly yellow. Not edible as they have a strong over ripe flavor and taste. Yet they are only 30% yellow, as they ripen more they are worse, these are yellow paw paws.
I have red papayas in the same area and they are fine.
Have used seasol, sprayed etc. still the same
Thank you

I am no expert but plenty of papayas are ripe when they are green aren't they. You might have one of there varieties or you might be trying to ripen a summer tropical fruit in winter. A bit like tomatoes if the plant lives the tomatoes ripen, it might take 2 months, and they dont taste any good even once they finally get greeny orange.

Its usually that they are not pollinated and are actually rotting/falling off not ripening.

The paw paws used to be reaaly great until 12 m-15 months ago. The plant is also biosexual. The fruit has been developing normal and some are really quite large. this has been happening for over 12 months. I thought I'd see how this years crop would turn out. still the same . today I have even picked 5 really good looking fruit and threw them in the bin. other trees 6 meters away are fine .In the past I have even picked some at point of turning colour and really firm as they should be and let the ripe inside. When slightly yellow the fruit was soft. I've tried everything except pull the tree out. Shame as its a young tree

That is a most unusual problem John, I have been watching what replies you got.
Hard or tasteless Pawpaws no problems but soft fruit? that is something different, especially since they were once fine and also the fact that others close by are fine.
I'm going to suggest that the tree needs sulphate of potash to strengthen the fruit and perhaps some sulphur because I think the soil could be to sweet.
I could be totally wrong but that is what I would consider
Cheers
