Hi My tangelo tree (six years) produces heaps of fruit each year but they never get sweet. They are always sour/bitter like under ripe. Gets lots of sun, the tree otherwise looks great and the fruit also are lovely and orange and have plenty of juice. I had one at another house (Guidlford) and it produce fantastic fruit. Any clues/ideas?

Haven't grown tangelos. But I do know that magnesium is often recommended to help sweeten fruit. A good dose of Epsom salts as the fruit is starting to ripen should help. Alternatively, dolomite also contains magnesium, but is probably slower acting then the salts.

Thats a very helpful tip, I'm onto it and will give it a go this week. We're just about to get a bunch or rain so this will help is soak in. Also do you think dog poo (aged) can be used as citrus fertiliser? Thanks again

Dog poo has health issues (worms from vague memory) and is generally recommended to be disposed of (bin)

Rick - if u have a worm farm/compost - stick the dog poo in there or bury it. My dogs "free range" but I have 4 acres for all their poo.... and it gets really stinky when it's moist and the sun gets on it....otherwise treat it like human poo (use gloves or scrub your hands) and don't get it near your veggies.

When it's aged it shouldn't hurt your trees...my dogs poop in the orchard heaps - but I wouldn't put directly around my trees in any great quantity tho' - it may burn the roots - check it out first. My dogs are also wormed properly too tho' - as Brad is correct.

Its one year on and I would like to report success. I applied the magnesium sulphate as suggested and this year the tangelos are lovely and sweet. It didn't make any difference to the crop I applied it to last year but this years crop is very nice and sweet. On the dog poo I'm trying a worm farm.

Mg is often recommended for sweetening but sulphur and potassium also pitch in with helping sweetness and flavour.
