Tying fruit tree stems together (forum)

I have just read about how someone has planted a few mango trees into the same hole, and then tied the stems together, so that in time the trunks will merge together, and so form one tree with many different varieties on. I have a fiscus benjamin (and yes I do know how big they get) that this has been done to, and just wondered if this is at all do-able with fruit trees.

Sorry Phil, I have been trying to find the link, but can't remember what it was. It really got my interest as I also read on the mango forum at www.toptropicals.com about them suggesting to a customer to plant a few trees together in the same hole and tie the stems together to form a multi graft tree, as the customer was not sure which variety he wanted.
I might just have to give it a go and see what happens, as it may be a better way than "true" multi graft trees where I find most of the time one graft will overtake the rest.
