Walnut

Hi all plant fanatics,

Just wondering if someone could help me in determining why my European Walnut (Juglans regia)has stopped growing? It was bought bare rooted from a local nursery. I planted it late winter (August)of 2009 with all the usual planting procedures that you do for new bare rooted trees. From being an ordinary single, branchless trunk, it gave off some (5) new shoots in mid Spring (Oct). The shoots now have big healthy leaves, however the terminal buds of the new branches have not continued to grow since about late November until now (March).

Being a new tree it'll be putting more effort into its root system than leaves- particularly for a slow growing tree like a walnut.

You wont get much growth now as the weather is cooling down- you can help it out for next spring by making sure there is a cleared area around it (e.g. make sure there isn't grass around it- dig it out or kill it) to reduce competition for the tree while it's still young.
