Watering Fruit Trees in Pots (forum)
5 responses

For a number of reasons I grow my fruit trees in large pots. They fruit successfully and are fed regularly. I now find that I need to travel for work so need to establish a watering system. What types of systems have other growers selected, the benefits and the problems overcome. Many thanks,

I use 15 cm apart dripper tube (the 8mm disameter kind), a loop with about 6 drippers is laid on the top of each pot, they are fed from 12mm poly main fed from the tap that is controlled by a holman electronic tap timer, on hots days I water 3 times as pots do not have hugh reserves eg a 50L pot might hold 5 litres of water.

13 or 19mm main poly line with small (4-5mm?) flexi tubing running up through the drainage hole on each pot- into a stake mounted shrubller (like a dripper but sends out 6-8 small streams- giving better coverage over the pot). Controlled via an auto retic timer
Downside- a lot of work to set up and you need to check the shrubblers every now and then to make sure they're not blocked (generally the plant will let you know there's a problem first-i.e. wilt- doesn't happen too often though).

My boy winds the tops off the shrublers, but they would be just as good.
He cant play with the drip tube.

I'm same, simple dripper irrigation system for around the patio. Tap timer runs the system as well as fills the dog's water bowl.
